Dave, VIPRE does normally show a progress bar for updates on the Manage > Updates page. There is a known issue where it will not display the progress bar if a definition update is already in progress before you open VIPRE's UI.
my viper will not open did two days ago now says need definition installed how do I do that every time i hit defination update button it shuts down?

Definition Updating Telltale
One of my computers seems to have a hard time doing definition updates. So I open Vipre and click on the Mange menu and then click Updates, then click on the Check Now button under Automatic Updates --- which doesn't seem to do anything: no spinning icon, no telltale, nothing.
It would sure be great if it would do something visible so we knew it was working.
How about a big UPDATE button on the MYVIPRE screen that flashes and actually does something immediately when clicked -- that would be totally awesome!
