VIPRE may display an error stating that "A problem has occurred in VIPRE Threat Scanner", as shown below:


RESOLUTION METHODS (Automated and Manual)


Automated Method

To correct the issue, we can download and run the VIPRE Definition Cleaner tool. This tool will automatically purge the definitions folder which will resolve this issue. If you prefer to perform a manual cleanup of the definition folder, skip to the MANUAL CLEANUP STEPS section at the bottom of this page.


VIPRE Definition Cleaner Download

Please click on the link below to download the VIPRE Definition Cleaner.


Run the VIPRE Definition Cleaner Tool

1. Double-click on the downloaded vipre_defcleaner.exe file or click the Run button (depending on your browser) to launch the cleaner.


2. When the User Account Control window appears, click Yes to continue.


3. The VIPRE Definitions Cleaner will display a message explaining how it works. Click Yes to proceed.


4. The tool will run in the background to remove old definitions, and display the following message when successful. Click OK.


VIPRE will now automatically download new definitions and apply them to your system. This can be seen in the Updates section of VIPRE.


No further action is required. Once VIPRE is finished downloading new definitions, the process is complete.



Manual Method

**These steps are not required if you have already cleaned your definitions using the VIPRE Definitions Cleaner tool in the previous section.**


We recommend using the VIPRE Definitions Cleaner tool, outlined above, to resolve the issue. However, if you prefer to manually clean definitions on your machine, proceed with the steps below.


Rename the VIPRE definitions folder

1. In Windows File Explorer (Windows key + E), navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\VIPRE


2. Rename the "Definitions" folder to "Definitions.Old" (right-click on folder, then select "Rename" at the bottom of the menu) 


3. Open VIPRE. Click on the Manage tab, then Updates. Click on the Check Now button to allow VIPRE to download new definitions.


4. VIPRE will download new definitions. This can take between 5 and 30 minutes, depending on your connection speed.


No further action is required. Once VIPRE is finished downloading new definitions, the process is complete.
